Today’s ideas … Tomorrow’s businesses


For the past few months, thousands of ambitious youths applied to the Youth Creativity and Innovation Award. The Applications have been reviewed in three rounds. First, the ideas presented were evaluated based on the indicated criteria. 45 evaluators dealt with submitted business ideas through a unique number assigned to each applicant. The identity of applicants was not disclosed to panel members. Each application was evaluated by three different evaluators. As a result, 35 ideas were shortlisted for the final round. On Oct 21st, these finalists gave oral presentations, 5 minutes each to a final jury panel composed of Dr. Dawood Alhadabi, Dr. Elham Almutwakel, Dr. Abdulkawi Radman and Mr. Abass AlBasha.

The final jury members have selected 16 business ideas. The winners are:

It is hard to think of a successful transition in Yemen without the participation of the country's youth, and their inspirational contributions for the future. UNDP is running the Youth Innovation and Creativity Award for the Most Innovative Business Ideas, aiming to mobilize the ingenuity and dynamic potential of young Yemenis as well as to create employment. This initiative will assist young people in becoming entrepreneurs capable of creating and sustaining profitable small enterprises in sectors which will further create employment. It is an opportunity for the large unemployed youth population of Yemen to confront the country's development challenges. The spirit of the Award lies in the pursuit of innovative and productive core business practices than can be an example for others and help to build the new Yemen.

Yemeni Youth all over Yemen are highly encouraged to apply to this competition. However, to be considered for this completion Applicants Must:

  • Hold Yemeni Nationality
  • Be between 18 – 30 years old
  • Have a Valid ID or Passport
  • Apply individually or in teams of up to 4 Members
  • Be currently living inside Yemen
  • Be willing to engage in the full process of the competition, including coming to Sana’a for the final stages of the competition
  • Fully submit the competition application forms as instructed
  • Submit only one Idea

The Innovation & Creativity Award Competition is meant to benefit Yemeni Youth who have innovative Ideas and are in need for capital to turn their ideas into businesses. For the purpose of this competition, for a business idea to be qualified as innovative it will have to meet one of the following characteristics:

  • Engaging Yemeni Youth Nationwide in the competition.
  • Encouraging youth to come up with innovative ideas.
  • Encouraging youth to startup their own businesses.
